In November 2021, the Dele Akinsade Foundation, in partnership with the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, launched the first edition of the USTEM Competition. This pioneering event was designed to ignite a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics among senior secondary school students in Ondo State.

The competition brought together students from various schools to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills through hands-on projects. Participants were encouraged to use local materials to develop prototypes that address everyday challenges in their communities. This practical approach not only made STEM education more accessible but also highlighted the value of innovation rooted in local context.

Finalists presented their projects at a science fair held at UNIMED, where they received feedback from a panel of judges made up of educators, scientists, and industry professionals. The event culminated in an award ceremony, with the winning team receiving a significant cash prize to further develop their project and support their school’s STEM initiatives.

The success of the inaugural USTEM Competition demonstrated the potential of young minds in Ondo and set a strong foundation for future editions. Through this event, the Dele Akinsade Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusive and improved STEM education, providing students with the encouragement and resources needed to become tomorrow’s innovators and leaders.
