USTEM Competition Vol. II (2022)

In November 2022, the Dele Akinsade Foundation continued its sponsorship of the USTEM Competition, held at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo. The second edition built on the momentum of the inaugural event, drawing even more participation from secondary schools across Ondo State and further cementing the competition’s reputation as a platform for student innovation.

A highlight of Volume II was the remarkable achievement by Ondo Boys High School, whose students developed a steam-powered electric generator using locally sourced materials. This project stood out for its ingenuity and practical relevance, addressing the persistent challenge of power supply in many Nigerian communities. The team’s work earned them the top prize of ₦500,000, which was awarded to support further development of their project and enhance STEM resources at their school.

The competition continued to focus on real-world problem-solving, encouraging participants to think critically and apply scientific knowledge to address everyday issues. Students benefited from mentorship by university staff and exposure to a wider scientific community, which helped build their confidence and aspirations for future STEM careers.

The 2022 USTEM Competition demonstrated the growing impact of the Dele Akinsade Foundation’s efforts to promote STEM education. By providing recognition, resources, and encouragement, the foundation is helping to nurture a new generation of innovators who are equipped to tackle local and national challenges.
